What to Expect Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Removed

Why do they need to be removed in the first place?
There are a number of reasons why wisdom teeth need to be removed, and the pain you are experiencing is one of them. For the most part though, the most basic reason that you wisdom teeth need to be removed comes down to space. Around the age of 18, our glorious wisdom teeth come in giving us a grand total of 32 pearly whites. The average mouth however only has space for 28 teeth. You do the math… the average person has 4 extra teeth that are occupying primary real estate. If these extra teeth are poorly position, the result can be impacted teeth that can cause a multitude of problems. Not only does bacteria have more room to grow, but impacted teeth can result in pain, swelling and even illness.
So what are the next steps?
- First and foremost, you need to schedule an oral exam with Dr. Miner or Dr. Weideman to determine the amount of space you have for your wisdom teeth. They will use x-rays to evaluate positioning of the teeth, and potential impacted teeth, and how much space they have to work with.
- Once we determine it is time to get your wisdom teeth removed, we’ll perform an outpatient surgery using IV sedation to increase your comfort and make your experience more pleasurable. All potential risks, along with the surgery itself will be explained prior to going under. Once your teeth are removed, your gums will be sutured and gauze will be placed by your teeth to control any bleeding that may occur.
- You will rest in our office in a supervised area until you are ready and approved to go home. We recommend having a friend or family member pick you up. We will provide a take home kit with postoperative instructions, prescriptions for pain meds, antibiotics and a follow up appointment for suture removal 1 week later.
